During the main social event, we could design an activity where attendees receive a sticker (like Fedora mascot) for their name badge and are encouraged to find others with matching tokens. Those with the most connections could win small prizes or swag. While not strictly mentoring-focused, it’s a fun way to mix up social circles and spark new connections.

This may not be able to be officially slotted in as a scheduled session, but I would be delighted to find a way to schedule it as a part of an evening social.

I have a crazy idea, so bear with me - How about we have this networking event take place throughout the entire Flock 2026's duration?

We can hand out random stickers at the registration desk alongside the event badges, and we would ask folks to stick them on their badges so they're clearly visible to others. Depending on which stickers they have, they can match with others having the same (or other stickers, if we want to further game-ify this), but then we would ask for folks to submit a self-portrait/selfie (or share their experiences with the other person) on a form. Now, we can further incentivise people to explore more avenues for conversations by having an associated Fedora Badge for doing this activity multiple times with various people, thus allowing people to connect with folks that they probably have not talked with much before. To game-ify it further, we can, of course, have tiered badges, like one badge for two conversations (i.e. bronze tier), another badge for four conversations (i.e. silver tier), and another one for six (or more) conversations (i.e. gold tier). The best part of it all? We can cross-verify the truthfulness of the textual submissions by checking if there is a mirroring submission from the other person's end mentioning this person's name.

Gosh, I should have used more line breaks. But how does this idea sound?

Notes from the May 7 meeting:

  • it should be an ongoing activity throughout the event rather than a time-boxed slot
  • we should check with the Flock team if they are fine handling the process during the registration, and if we have enough stickers from last year

Action items:

  • @jonatoni check the availability of last years Fedora mascot stickers.
  • @jonatoni confirm with the registration desk team if they are fine handling stickers and sharing the "game rules" during registration.

So I handed this off to a local LLm for some mediocre 1st pass, here's where I got to:

StickerMatch — the Flock icebreaker

On arrival

  • You've been given one sticker at random.
  • Each design has been assigned to a small group of attendees — you won't know how many share yours until you start looking.
  • Stick it somewhere visible: your badge, lanyard, or jacket.

During the conference

  • Keep an eye out for anyone wearing the same sticker as you — they're your match. Go and say hello.
  • Matches can happen anywhere across both days: between sessions, over lunch, or at social events.
  • When you find a match, go say hi.
  • For bonus points, take a picture with both your stickers to get a Fedora Badge

The spirit of the StickerMatch

  • StickerMatch is an excuse to talk to people you wouldn't otherwise meet, not a race.
  • One genuine chat is worth more than five quick signatures.
  • Respect people's space — a polite "I'm just heading somewhere" is a perfectly valid response, and that goes both ways.
  • If someone's mid-conversation or heads-down, come back later.

Probably needs editing but its a good start?
