#63 - Fedora Week of Diversity - planning for 2026 - dei/tickets

Over the past few years, we’ve experimented with different formats for the Fedora Week of Diversity: contributor stories, virtual events, local meetups, and more, and many of these approaches have worked really well. Unfortunately, due to timing, we weren’t able to organize an edition this year, but I’d love for us to bring it back next year.

Proposed timing: July or September

Proposed format:

One virtual event (4–5 hours) including talks, social activities, and one or more panel discussions
A series of interviews or spotlight stories featuring community members
Optionally, regional/local activities if there’s interest

Organizing team: as always I’d like to create a group of volunteers to help bring this together. Main areas where help is needed: event production, content and promotion, speaker management, and design. Raise your hand if you’d like to join ✨

Theme: open to suggestions, could focus on local communities, community growth, belonging, mentorship, or celebrating contributions across different backgrounds.

I’d love to hear your ideas, thoughts, or anything you’d like to see included in the next edition.

This sounds like a fantastic initiative! I’d love to be a part of the organizing team especially in the areas of content, promotion, and speaker coordination.

For the theme, I’d suggest: “Grounded in Community: Growing Together Across Borders”this could highlight the importance of communities while celebrating the global, diverse spirit of Fedora.

Looking forward to collaborating and hearing more ideas from everyone!

Due to time constraints during today’s meeting, the Week of Diversity 2026 was not discussed in depth, but the critical next step of recruiting organizers was established. We agreed that a dedicated group of volunteers is necessary to drive this event forward.

Consequently, @jonatoni accepted an action item to draft and post a call for volunteers on Fedora Discussion. This recruitment effort will be conducted asynchronously, setting the stage for detailed planning to begin when the team comes back from year-end holidays in January.

The team discussed initial planning for the 2026 Fedora Week of Diversity. October is the preferred timing, though the F45 release (October 20) may affect contributor availability. The team aligned on a short, 2-3 hour virtual event with short talks (10-20 minutes) as the primary format. A theme is needed to bind the event together; "Respect the Culture" was proposed as a starting point but needs further brainstorming in this ticket. @theprogram expressed interest in virtual event production roles.

I'm htinking about the culture, I better drop it here to quickly recall.

For written interviews, I was thinking:

the culture in Fedora
- we may ask contributors how their local culture, language, or background shows up in how they work in Fedora (packaging, docs translation, community norms they brought in and so on)
- taking an example of the candy swap, we may want to invite someone who came up with this idea to talk about this in both written and in the video meeting.
"Foods & Fedora" or "Desks of Fedora" photo thread - this would be interesting for people to share a bit of their culture (what's on their desk, what they're eating while they work, stickers on their laptops etc) alongside their contribution story

- inspired by the one we did in 2024 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMMNVs74Z24&t=1s, we maybe need to do it this year too, and make it even better ( let's discuss more about this)
The live session

we may want to invite translation team members talk about the cultural work behind translating Fedora (Localizing Fedora)
something like "Ask me about my region's Fedora community", lightning talks from regional ambassadors/LUGs (mgiht be a good spot for local communities also doing Fedora work) on what community-building looks like locally.
I'm thinking of an open mic too, just an informal one where anyone(or the ones we'll identify beforehand) can share a 2-minute thing about their culture and how they connect it to open source.

It will be hard for me to be involved heavily in the organization this year. That said, I could definitely present about the Fedora candy swap tradition, how it started, how it is going, and why it is a special part of our annual gathering.

I remember @bookwar also had a talk idea she was interested in giving for FWD, but now I forgot what the topic was. 😄
