What do you need?

This ticket was originally filed on GitLab by Micheal Winters

Request type

Graphic Design / Artwork (logo, an icon, an infographic, swag design, etc.)

Problem Statement

A logo (icon) for each of the triad of related internal tools:

  • Fedora Messaging
  • Datanommer
  • Datagrepper

It would be incredible if they somehow fit together, either physically or thematically.
These logos would be very helpful in slide decks and diagrams for discussing our technology. Visual quality / branding is not high priority. Examples where these logos would be used:

  • We are currently doing a lot of technical work around this set of internal tools, which includes collaboration with external entities such as Linux Foundation. Icons would facilitate that collaboration and possibly bring in more Fedora contributors.
  • I'm putting together a presentation for Release Party F43 to talk about this work.
  • We don't have many internal architectural diagrams for our infrastructure documentation. These would facilitate creating some.

Here is an overview of how these products fit together:

overview.jpg

  • Fedora Messaging is a system that receives messages from many different places and "routes" them to where they need to go. For example, if someone makes a code change on Github, we get a message and then send it to systems that need to process that code change. A single message might go to multiple interested parties.
    • Possible analogy: Fedora Messaging is like the postal service, or at least the sorting facility.
    • Possible visuals: arrows going to multiple destinations; a "town crier"; a "sorting machine" with different color boxes coming in on one belt and going out on multiple belts dedicated to each color; a prism.
  • Datanommer is a service that basically records the entire history of Fedora Messaging into a database. There are lots of reasons we want the history, including to troubleshoot our systems (did we get the message we thought we should get?), and to perform analysis on those messages (which user sent the most messages in July?).
    • Possible analogy: a scribe / historian. Or maybe Santa Claus / elf on the shelf 😄 .
    • Possible visuals: a simplified "mouth" somewhat like the famous "lips" logo but chomping with comically huge teeth, maybe eating a stream of 1s and 0s; Pacman; a hay baler, scooping up strewn hay and making nice neat cubes; a pencil writing graphed data like a seismograph or polygraph into a giant medieval-style spool.
  • Datagrepper is a public interface to the Datanommer database, where anyone on the internet can query for data. It is generally the only place where humans interact with the data.
    • Possible analogy: Librarian; magnifying glass finding needle in the haystack (the "1" in the pile of "0"s?); a retail store with data on the shelf.

Contacts

@fedora-mwinters
This request falls under the CommOps team, but the logos will make their way into the apps.

Deadline

It would be amazing to have anything at all (even sketch!) in time for Release Party F43, but that's incredibly short notice: November 13.
Otherwise, there is no deadline.

Who will benefit?

Fedora contributors and external audiences. This work is happening in collaboration with other groups such as Linux Foundation, so a visual would facilitate that collaboration.

Inspiration Examples

No response

Priority / Severity

Medium (This will bring a good increase in performance/productivity/usability)

Just posting @madelinepeck's last comment on this from the Gitab ticket:

Reviewed in Design Team Meeting 3/2/26 -
The line weight of the visuals should be the same. Also be aware of tangent lines, the corner of the boxes are too close to the conveyor belt.

I messaged the comm ops team to see if we could get some feedback from them! I think waiting til then is a good plan.
I went down a rabbit hole of looking to see what other designers do when it comes to using assets vs creating them from scratch. The concensus seems to be if you have a strict deadline and low budget, work efficiently and don't feel bad for using assets when you need to. Some designers said they searched so long for a specific asset it would have been quicker to make themselves.

I would recommend then, for this ticket that has no deadline, and as you get your footing as a designer, experiment with making assets yourself. Sometimes also editing an asset to be slightly different can be enough. It can set you apart from someone who can only use precreated assets.

I attached an svg to open in Inkscape to try creating your design in there.

fedora_messaging_et_al

The SVG attached needs to be opened in Inkscape and there are some tips in there! I think it's to help you have the file set up properly in Inkscape. You would need to use Inkscape for this, not penpot or figma since it's for a logo design.

Hi Nik, nice work! Can you give use more information when uploading a design as it helps us understand you're design decisions more. Here are some questions to answer:

  • What logo is this for?

  • Can you explain what this is?

  • Why have you done it this way or why you have chosen this visual for the logo?

Some feedback/action items:

  • Set all the line weights to be the same.

  • Merge the rectangle and the triangle of the arrows together using the Shape Builder tool on Inkscape to make it one shape.

  • Have the bottom of the arrows flush against the envelope, so there's no gap between them.

  • The point of the triangle in the envelope needs to be centred.

  • The arms of the triangle in the envelope can come from the corners of the envelope. Like this:

image

  • The envelope could be smaller and the arrows bigger.

  • Points of the arrows can be rounded in the stroke settings

Let me know if this makes sense! Thanks

What logo is this for?

Fedora Messaging

Can you explain what this is?

An envelope with arrows in it, symbolizing sorting

Why have you done it this way or why you have chosen this visual for the logo?

Heavy inspiration from Madeline's first design for FM

I agree with all of Emma's feedback! I'd definitely recommend completing each bullet point on the list.

Not sure how you made the triangle part of the arrows. They look a little off with the rounded line. There is a shape tool you can use to create a perfect triangle. Go to 'Fill and Stroke', under 'Stroke Style', and select the middle option for both join and cap, as one way to round out the triangles before merging them with rectangles to make arrows.

I'd think about the visual weight that your design has right now. Visual weight is the degree to which an element in a design attracts the viewer’s eye. Right now, the envelope is the first thing my eyes are drawn to. Its thick lines and the size it takes up in the square. Ideally, you'd want the whole design to work together and read as one cohesive element. By unifying each part's line weight and considering the size of the arrows and the envelope, this can be solved!

After all the suggestions Emma made are completed, I would add some color to the design to mirror the colors in the sketch!
For myself, I've found it easiest to duplicate the shapes, remove the stroke line, and then position the block of color under the separate lineart.

Here, I made something somewhat better

Here, I made something somewhat better

Sorry for the delay here! I got sick and then hit a work crunch upon return. Some feedback:

  • Datanommer: The "Datanommer as a bird" is fantastic! ❤️

    • Ideally, the bird would be stylized in some way where it could stand on its own without the 1s and 0s (which might be too small to visually parse on a large diagram). I think the current design might suffice, but perhaps we can push it a bit further (without necessarily relying on color)?
  • Fedora Messaging: I think my original idea of "arrows" for Fedora Messaging might have been a poor one in retrospect. These icons will mostly live on architectural diagrams, where we already have lots of arrows going to & from other icons, so arrows going to arrows is a bit confusing.

    • Perhaps this idea could be used if the arrows are somehow visually contained, e.g. inside the envelope shape? Though keep in mind, these icons still need to be "legible" at fairly small size (maybe 20 other icons on the same slide), so probably only one arrow?
    • Maybe instead of an envelope, we could use a road sign analogy like this but with something to indicate "messaging" instead of driving?
    • Another angle: the messaging service itself is almost entirely automated. It's sorta like the telephone system -- we don't have any human operators any more plugging wires into a switchboard -- all of the "getting messages where they belong" is handled by machines. And all those envelopes in the sketches gives me personally a fairly "human" feel. Maybe we could play off of that automated aspect somehow? Robots / gears / etc? (A robot mailman?)
  • Datagrepper: I think the magnifying glass is about as good as it's going to get. Same feedback as the Datanommer bird: can we "punch it up" to 11? (Maybe draw some flames, lol, I don't know.)

    • Maybe useful: while the other services are essentially "back office" systems, Datagrepper is the only part that lives on the web and that users can directly interact with.
  • Another idea: as much as I love the Datanommer bird, it occurs to me that we could possibly relate these products visually via the Datanommer "scroll" idea, e.g. Datagrepper is the magnifying glass over the scroll's contents, and Fedora Messaging is the quill? Don't ask me, I'm an engineer :)

The bird could hold the scroll, as it's presenting the data.

I think my original idea of "arrows" for Fedora Messaging might have been a poor one in retrospect.

At one point I made a conveyor belt design, but it was scrapped (we could go back to it tho).

The Pac-Man sketch actually demonstrates the concept really well, but Pac-Man is a Bandai Namco trademark and they seem keen to enforce. We likely want to steer away from any well-known pop culture icons that are owned trademarks.

Hey Nik loving seeing your paper and pencil idea process! This is the bread and butter of good design so it's awesome to see! This is the first step, so I'd recommend pushing it even further.

I've attached an example of what I think you should try; something as simple as a house still has a lot of ways to be represented. Some of your ideas have the potential to be excellent depending on how you execute them, so I'd recommend taking something you've already drawn and try changing it in small intentional ways.

house icons

Line weight, visual weight and color are all things really helpful to keep in mind with icon design! Since its going to be read at a smaller scale, whether its a physical drawing or digital, squinting and making it smaller to check if the design is legible is recommended.

I thought of this one for a bit and went through the comments and this is what I got.

Datagrepper

datagrepper.svg
Inspired by one of the example designs that I made on paper where "shiny, clean" data was pulled out of junk

Datanommer

datanommer.svg
Inspired by someone saying that datanommer should have a bird in it.
I tried to find an SVG where a bird had its mouth open (for the nommer part), but I was not successful, so here's a "Halloween crow" instead.

Hey Nik I had a lot of feedback written out and then when I went to comment, I had to re log in with my fedora account and it deleted what I had written.. sigh.. that usually doesn't happen when I re-login otherwise I would have copied it.

I'll write down the main points and then upload another comment with some more feedback.

We have this old ticket on gitlab which would be very helpful to look at for some references on icon designs from start to finish.

  • Be careful of your artwork getting to close to the border of the circle. It should have enough space so it doesn't get cut off.
  • I'd look over the principles of design again to look at how you can push things. Right now your designs have a lot of white space and not enough balance. Something to keep in mind!

image

  • I think we can find a more effective way to communicate part of what datagrepper does then with trash bags as our visual. Perhaps a diamond in a haystack, or a librarian wearing glasses and a speach bubble with zeros and ones.
  • I'd also recommend playing around in Inkscape and seeing how you can make these assets yourself. There's nothing wrong with finding ones online, but if you make it yourself with the bezier tool its a lot easier if you decide you want to change the shape slightly.
  • If there are long gaps in between when you post and receive feedback, I'd recommend you try to push your designs more in the interim. I know it can be hard to self-direct, but taking a break from work and then coming back to it with fresh eyes and developing it in a few different ways can be really helpful. This skill will be helpful in whichever job field you end up in.

I think you've done a good job on the other ticket of showing your capabilities with that! Ai feedback is a great stepping stool, and then playing around with it for longer periods of time, is the next.
