This ticket has been migrated from Gitlab. See: https://gitlab.com/fedora/design/team/requests/-/issues/104

Originally filed by me:

This ticket can be started once #103 is closed.

Goal

The goal of this ticket is to further develop the concept chosen in https://gitlab.com/fedora/design/team/requests/-/issues/103 into a clear visual blueprint for the final assets.

We would want to have a written concept / ‘story’ explaining the inspiration and how that will influence the design choices. This will act as the single source of truth when creating designs.

We also need 3-4 rough sketches that illustrate the concept and will be used in the creation of the final assets such as tshirts, posters, stream overlays etc.

Outcome

  • Written concept story (1-2 paragraphs)
  • 3-4 sketches illustrating concept (could be in a story board layout)

This ticket will be closed once the concept sketches have been approved by the Flock 2026 organisers.

Some of the visuals that we gathered to represent alchemy for Flock! Also going to post on the flock postcards ticket

On the penpot brainstorm, we explored how Alchemy related to Prague. It was during the reign of Emperor Rudolf II that Prague got a mystical, alchemist reputation as he funded and brought Alchemists to search for the Philosopher’s stone. This was around 1500-1600 which was the tail end of the Middle Ages so we can bring in elements of a medieval aesthetic to make it more gothic and otherworldly.

The overall concept I was going for was:

Colur is working on his Magnum Opus, Fedora, in Medieval Bohemia as the starry night twinkles outside.

I have some sketches and ideas based on the above visuals Madeline posted, and the research gathered.

2026-flock-sketches-2

  1. Background

This is a night sky with those medieval stars that were in one of the visuals on the penpot brainstorm. We can play around with the gradient with the Fedora blues or purples and add some texture to make an interesting background. This would be nice for a general background for the likes of the name badges or social media posts.

  1. Sun & Moon

Again pulling inspiration from one of the graphics that was done in a medieval, almost heraldic style.

  1. Alchemist Colur

Alchemists were brought to Prague to search for the Philosopher’s stone. This is Colur as one of them. I combined elements from portraits from two famous Alchemists, Edward Kelley and John Dee.

  1. Discovering Fedora

This is Colur 'discovering' the Philosopher’s Stone, but instead of the Philosopher’s Stone it’s Fedora. The colours radiating out from it are the four foundation colours - this is what makes up Fedora and is reflective of Flock’s cfp themes.

  1. Fedora as the Philosopher’s Stone

Again this is imagining Fedora as the Philosopher’s Stone - this time up close and sparkly to show that it’s magical.

  1. Decorative corners

These are reference to the decorative corners you see on medieval manuscripts. I took inspiration from chapter dividers in a text written by John Dee, one of the Alchemists brought to Prague by Emperor Rudolf, and also some generic decorations too. I incorporated Fedora’s four foundation icons and colours.

Hopefully we have time to discuss on today's call :D I would like to get vectorising soon

Why not make the Fedora's Stone have the colors shown in the background of 4?

The concept is very interesting, and the illustrations are very nice. I think number 5 is more suitable for highlighting Fedora’s colors than number 4 :)

I had another idea, how about we merge either 4 and 6 or 5 and 6?

@armanwu @niknikovsky Thanks for the ideas! I'm going to start vectorizing the sketches as part of #10

Doing so will allow us to chop and change and merge all different elements of these! Kinda like a sticker sheet but for creating the graphics and assets needed for Flock :D

I'll post any progress on #10 going forward and share on the next design call :) Thanks!
