What do you need?
Illustrated character concepts and personas that represent the different types of people who contribute to and participate in Fedora. This project would build on Fedora's existing graphic art library (Beefy Miracle, Panda, Badger, and Colúr) to develop relatable, humanized representations of the community — telling stories about people first, instead of only describing tasks.
Request type
Graphic Design / Artwork (logo, an icon, an infographic, swag design, etc.)
Problem Statement
Fedora has many different contribution pathways, but the community often describes participation in terms of tasks and technical roles rather than the people behind them. New and prospective contributors lack a relatable, visual way to see themselves in the project. Character-driven personas would make the community more approachable and help people identify where they fit in — whether they are coders, translators, event organizers, writers, designers, packagers, or something else entirely.
Contacts
@jflory7 (Fedora Design Team / CommOps). This project was originally scoped as an intern project in commops/interns#13 but is being migrated here for broader Design Team engagement.
Deadline
No hard deadline. This is a low-priority, ambitious project that can be picked up when capacity allows. It is well-suited as a stretch goal or a collaborative project with interns, new contributors, or cross-team partnerships.
Who will benefit?
The entire Fedora community. New contributors gain a more welcoming, relatable entry point. Existing contributors get visual representations that celebrate the diversity of participation styles. The Marketing Team gains ready-made assets for storytelling and outreach. The Docs Team gains a framework for organizing contributor-facing documentation around real personas rather than abstract role descriptions.
Inspiration Examples
Fedora's existing mascot characters (Beefy Miracle, Panda, Badger, Colúr) are a starting point. The project would expand this cast to represent contributor archetypes — not just mascots, but characters with personality and context that reflect how people actually experience the Fedora community.
Priority / Severity
Low (anything else e.g., trivial, minor improvements)
Provenance: Migrated from commops/interns#13 (opened 2024-05-04). The original issue scoped this as an intern cohort project with phases for brainstorming, interviews, Fedora Docs integration, and Marketing promotion. This ticket reframes it as a standing Design Team project open to anyone with capacity and interest.

Are we talking about making some sort of comic or an actual animation?
If we're talking about animation, then we should also team up with the Fedora Podcast team (or another one that does audio related content)
We discussed this while planning for the upcoming sprint and converted the request to an Epic. This is an interesting project but would need to be scoped and broken down into a number of tickets, which we can do when we start working on it :) this is a very interesting project!!
