Fedora Spins are versions of Fedora featuring alternative desktop environments and accompanying sets of software. Fedora 34 introduces a new Spin utilizing the i3 window manager. This is the first Fedora Spin to feature a tiling window manager instead of a traditional desktop environment.
The i3 Spin provides a better installation experience for Fedora users who prefer to use i3. Prior to this Spin, end users who wished to use i3 on Fedora needed to install another Edition or Spin of Fedora, then install the i3 window manager and related packages separately, a process often requiring an external guide or tutorial.

== PipeWire is now the default audio service
The *Pipewire* service now manages all audio output and input. *Pipewire* replaces the *PulseAudio* service in general use cases and the *JACK* service in professional use cases. The system now redirects audio from applications that use *PulseAudio*, *JACK*, or the *ALSA* framework into *Pipewire*.
Benefits of *Pipewire* over the previous solutions include:
* A unified solution for consumer and professional users
* A flexible, modular architecture
* High performance and low latency, similar to the *JACK* service
* Isolation between audio clients for better security
You no longer have to configure the *JACK* service for applications that use it. All *JACK* applications now work in the default Fedora configuration.
== Xwayland is now distributed as a separate package
The Xwayland display server was previously distributed together with the X.org server. It is now distributed separately in the `Xwayland` package.
Xwayland is receiving significantly more upstream updates than X.org. The separate packaging enables Fedora to release the updated Xwayland and keep X.org at the current stable version.

Golang 1.16, the latest stable release of the language, is available in Fedora 34.
Compared to Golang 1.15, there are a number of changes, including, among others:
* Module-aware mode is enabled by default, further consolidating Golang's move towards modules being the preferred dependency management system.
* The `go install` command has been updated, adding the ability to build by version suffixes. It is now recommended that one use `go install` for building and installing Golang packages when using modules.
* Published modules can now be flagged as 'retracted' using the `retract` flag in `go.mod`. This does not remove a published version, but it will be ignored for users wanting the `latest` version of a module. Dependencies for a retracted module are preserved, but there is a warning for those who specifically wish to use the retracted package (dependencies will not break as a result of using `retract`).

* The Golang runtime is improved, with memory allocation on Linux now reacting quicker to system memory demand.

* The linker has been further improved compared to v1.15 and is significantly quicker, uses less memory, and usually creates smaller executables.
* The `io` package has been updated, including adding of the `io/fs` package for interface with the file system, as well as deprecation of `io/ioutil`. Functionality of `io/ioutil` has been moved to other packages (`io` and `os`).
* The `GOVCS` environment variable has been introduced to allow users to specify which version control system can be trusted and used to download source code.

Comp-NeuroFedora lab provides Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) to streamline computational neuroscience work.

== Scale ZRAM to Full Memory Size
In Fedora, a swap partition is not created by default at installation time. Instead, a zram device is created, and swap enabled on it during start-up. zram is a type of RAM drive that uses compression.
For Fedora 34, the size of this zram device is increased. It is set at the same size as RAM or 8 GB, whichever is smaller. This change allows computers with smaller amounts of RAM to successfully complete installation using the Anaconda installer.
Memory allocation for zram happens dynamically, so the block device's full size is not allocated as it is created. This dynamic resourse allocation, combined with compression in the zram device that is generally greater than 2:1, ensures that the swap file does not entirely consume available memory.

A new `fbrnch` (Fed Brunch) package provides a utility which helps simplify or semi-automate workflow processes for Fedora Packagers. This package is available to users without them having to add another Copr repository.

The enhancements to the SELinux policy include new:

`ntpsec` is designed with the highest security standards in mind and its focus is to be a more secure implementation of `ntp`.
This change improves the overall security of Fedora, as `ntp` contained a number of vulnerabilities that had been exploited in recent years and were not fixed, nor were fixes considered likely to come soon.
`ntpsec` is an open-source, actively maintained, fork of `ntp` and improves on it by removing obsolete code, updating the codebase, and adding additional features.
There are not likely to be any visible effects for Fedora users: `ntpsec` is already almost fully compatible with `ntp` and so existing settings should continue to function for most users.
