We need a news site for Fedora that we can post news as and when needed. The current Fedora News site run by Thomas Chung can be redirected here. We intend to post Fedora Weekly News, important updates, release announcements etc.

Features we need

Allow multiple editors
Allow anyone to submit a news story with editors approving it
Rich content and not just text
Ability to comment on stories
Toggle between allowing comments anonymously, registered users only or none at all system wide or at a per story level
Search
Multiple tags/categories
Calendar and archives
RSS feeds for upcoming events, stories and comments
Automatically highlight popular content - Today or all time based on page views and/or comments

From my short evaluation, Drupal seems to fit our needs but if there are other good alternatives, I would go with that.

Ok, Fedora 9 sounds like a good target for this to be implemented. I've got the basic setup at:

Couf has access. Here are some pieces I'd like to see done before we push this into production:

FAS integration
Common look and feel for the Fedora theme (plus news artwork if it is deemed required)
Required plugins packaged
mod_security integration (selinux is in the works as well but I'd prefer one not block the other right now)
Cluster support

Other notes: We can make news.fedoraproject.org/ available as a read-only site but the login will be at admin.fedoraproject.org/news/ or fedoraproject.org/news/.

I'm open to other applications that meet the requirements listed (ivazquez mentioned tikiwiki I think). I'm not happy with drupal but lets give it a shot unless something else comes up, its better then doing it ourselves for this particular app.

It was pointed out that infrastructure are going to be using Wordpress for other infrastructure elements, and that this fulfills our list of basic requirements. If we could get a test instance of Wordpress somewhere then we could give it a test run to see if it's what we need - This would be great if possible :)

1.3.3 had a bunch of problems; currently working w/ 1.5rc1
Have gotten further with getting SSL support working
** still going to need code patches to remove 'http' protocol dependency
** need to investigate setcookie calls for only sending up the auth cookie over secured connections
** need to investigate whether 1.5rc1 has the wp-2.5.1 cookie auth fix

How's it going? I'm sorry I ask this a lot, just like to know what's going on and make sure we keep making progress :) I do really appreciate the work you're doing though!

Maybe we could get a weekly update? Would seem excessive to schedule a meeting time for this, but if we kept this ticket updated once a week everyone could see how things were progressing. What do you think?

I think the default roles will accomplish multiple aspects of the desired workflow; one thing I'm not sure about:

We could look at munging permissions/roles a bit via a custom plugin, or just implement an email RT queue, etc.

We have a plugin used for redhatmagazine.com that looks for stories marked to be feature; it's not based upon pageviews/comments. We could look at opening that plugin up, or just finding an automagic one.

Yeah, initially I think we can start with taking stories via email. Don't think we need to get any more techincal than this - let's just get the main site functional.

Seeing the theme live, it could clearly do with some tidying up! I'll see what I can do on that front today, and also on creating an RPM. Will also try and get a group of people together to begin testing work-flow if that's OK, so we can be ready with people as well as code.

This is in good shape now, I've not heard from the project manager since wordpress-mu got in to fedora. Either way it won't be done for F10.

In any case, waiting on the UI enhancements coming down the pike in 2.7 won't be a bad thing.

I can start picking up some of the PM things, if someone can point me in the right direction... I'm not sure if anyone's layed-out any hardware resources or what-not for this yet, etc...

We might be able to get mizmo to help provide UX help... might even have some other folks willing to help mock up some stuff on a volunteer basis...

I'd just like to see this move forward a bit... I have motive in that eventually I'd like to see us be able to offer fedora-branded public blogs if folks don't want to use something like wordpress.com directly :)
