Welcome Message & Introduction
Welcome
Hello
@cannonw(FAS profile)! Welcome to Fedora! Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
Get to know each other better
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
This is not my first time trying to contribute to open source, but it will hopefully be my first time successfully finding a way to do so. It's a very intimidating thing to approach. My background is in IT as far as my career is concerned, but I've been programming since I was 12 years old with a strong preference for C - although I do mess around with other languages. My operating system is Fedora, outside of work where I'm forced to use Windows - I use absolutely no Windows in my personal life. As far as language proficiency goes, I speak only English but I speak it quite well. I'm familiar with git, my preferred text editor is vim, my first job in IT was as a sysadmin, please ask more questions if you're curious.
I have used mailing lists before, my ideal chat platform is IRC but I'm willing to figure out Matrix, and I do have experience with moderation and administration of online forums as well as chatrooms. I don't know the exact number of hours per week, I work monday-friday and want to start to commit my evenings and weekends to doing as much as I can.
Thanks for reading this mess, I could have formatted it better but I'm not that great at talking about myself.
Hello and welcome to Fedora!
Fedora used to use IRC a lot, however almost everything happens on Matrix now, however, I think you'll get the hang of it quickly.
I put in some interest tags for you, if you think they don't fit you, drop a comment here and somebody from the Join team will change them for you.
Since you used to be a sysadmin, you could try helping us in infra: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/infra/day_to_day_fedora/
