Welcome Message & Introduction
Welcome
Hello
@sathush504(FAS profile)! Welcome to Fedora! Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)
Get to know each other better
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
I sent this to mailing list but,
Hello everyone,
I am glad to become a part of Fedora community.
I'm Sathush Rajamanthri, Data Science undergraduate. My education has provided me with a deep interest in data science, machine learning and software development, particularly in areas where practical tools can help translate technical results into greater value and utility.
Technically, I have used Python for data analysis and basic machine learning tasks like data cleaning, feature engineering, and simple models via scikit-learn. I have also done small projects with APIs and Streamlit, which gave me a good understanding of how to link data, code and front end together. I also have some familiarity with web development (Node.js and basic frontend), and I use Git and GitHub for version control and collaboration on projects.
Beyond coding, I have been using Linux for the past six years or so, and more recently I have been exploring Fedora. This has made me more interested in open-source software and communities. This is my first contribution to a FOSS community, and I am doing it with a sense of experimentation and a long-term perspective to contribute. I am particularly interested in the dynamics of open-source communities in how they work together, review contributions and welcome contributors.
I've come to Fedora through my general interest in Linux and open source. I tried out different distributions and communities, and I found Fedora to be technically oriented, have a vibrant contributor community, and a good project ecosystem.
I would say that at this point, I am a FOSS contributor who is keen to learn, practice and contribute regularly to small, clear tasks, with the intention to gradually get more involved. I would particularly like to contribute to projects around Python tools, machine learning or data science pipelines, documentation, and easy-to-understand web projects.
I am familiar with broader communication tools, but have not used mailing lists before, so I will need some time to get used to the process. I have experience with instant messaging apps like Discord. I have around 5-10 hours per week to volunteer, depending on my study load.
I would greatly appreciate some direction as to where to start and what parts of the project might be best suited for a volunteer like me. I appreciate the opportunity to learn and contribute to the community in any capacity where I'm helpful.
Hi @sathush504 , welcome to the community!
The AI/ML SIG is worth looking at, and there's the documentation team that is actively looking for people to help keep it all up to date. If you'd like to go deeper into software building and so on, we're always looking for more people to help us maintain packages. A few links:
