Welcome Rafael,

Hello @rafaelmcruz(FAS profile)! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?

If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in touch! :)

- software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
your experience in communication platforms:
- have you used mailing lists before?
- what is your preferred real time chat platform?
- have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.

Hey everyone! To help you understand my background and where I can fit best, here are a few more details about myself:

FOSS Experience: This is my first time formally contributing to an open-source community, and I'm highly motivated to learn how everything works behind the scenes.

Operating System: Fedora is my main distribution on my personal machine, and I absolutely love it. At work I use MacOS, and am pretty familiar with windows, alothough I abandoned it, I think for good this time.
Background & Skills: I work in IT and recently transitioned to an infrastructure project where I am dealing with RHEL and Ansible. I'm also a working student studying Computer Engineering, where I've programmed in C, a bit of Assembly, and Arduino. My main focus here is definitely infrastructure, system administration, and automation.
Communication: This is my first time using a mailing list, and Matrix is currently my preferred real-time chat platform. I'm still learning how both tools work.
Time Commitment: Since I work full-time and study, my time is quite limited. I can realistically commit to about 1 to 2 hours per week, mostly during weekends, to start helping out with small, bite-sized tasks. I'm almost on school vacations, so, in the future I might increase the available time.

As MatH mentioned in the Matrix chat, I'm very interested in the upcoming "Home Lab spin of Server" project and the Fedora Infrastructure team. I’d love to start with tiny, miniature tasks (documentation, cleanups, or basic testing) to get my hands dirty and learn the workflow.

How did I learn about the project? I've been diving deeper into the Red Hat ecosystem because of my current job and certification studies (currently studying to obtain RHCSA), and joining the Fedora Project felt like the most natural and rewarding step to grow as a professional.

@ankursinha, I had actually just finished reading through the apprentice program links provided , and I would absolutely love to go down that road!

Focusing on the Infrastructure team and the upcoming Home Lab (mentioned by @theprogram) project fits perfectly with my professional goals and studies. I’ve already cloned the public Ansible repository to my machine and I'm currently reviewing the documentation to get familiar with the workflow.

Please let me know how I can join the 'fi-apprentice' group. Looking forward to working with you all!

I think the way fi-apperentice works is that once you've introduced yourself to the team etc., you ask to be added to it:

Luckily, infrastructure is one of the teams that have a very well defined onboarding process. So, I'd just follow that doc 👍
