Hello @postonjs(FAS profile)! Welcome to Fedora!

Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?

your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
- have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
- how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?

- community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
- Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
- non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
- software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
your experience in communication platforms:
- have you used mailing lists before?
- what is your preferred real time chat platform?
- have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.

Hey all! My name's Jared, I'm a software developer in the US. A lot of what I'm interested in at the moment has to do with infrastructure and low-level programming. I have some experience with CI/CD build/testing and release pipelines, as well as building and fielding Linux operating systems. Here lately, I've gotten a bit more interested in the inner workings of the Linux kernel, and that interest has shifted over to include embedded systems. I've been between reading Linux Device Drivers by Rubini and Kroah-Hartman, and Programming Embedded Systems by Barr and Massa. I used to run Ubuntu as my main OS for about a year, and here recently I've switched over to Fedora for my main distribution. I have experience with the CLI, Git, RPM and DEB packaging. I normally program in Python, Java, and Rust, but I've been learning more C here recently because of the low-level programming interest. I'm also reasonably proficient (~B2 level?) in Spanish.

I learned about the Fedora Project through my experience with RHEL at my job. Also, here recently I've really started wanting to develop in open-source communities, and Fedora seemed like a pretty great spot to do that.

I don't have much experience with FOSS communities! I just recently started really diving into the philosophies behind free/open source software, and it's something that I've really resonated with. But this would be my first time being a part of a community like this :)

I don't really have experience with communication platforms, but I've been lurking on Element in some Fedora rooms to get a feel for the environment.

I'm hoping to spend around 5-10 hours a week on volunteering for the Fedora Project.

I hope to learn more about the Fedora ecosystem and everyone in it :)

Good to see you on the chat — posting my reply here too for the record.

I can't say I've looked at embedded systems in a long time — also not sure if Fedora has a SIG (special interest group) for it. People do work on getting Fedora to work on smaller boards (R-pi) etc, but I reckon all the work is done directly with upstream, like the kernel and so on (eg. https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/raspberry-pi/ ). There's lots of Python/Java/Rust/C in our packages though — and I'm sure there must be packages related to embedded systems and so on too (here's a quick search: https://packages.fedoraproject.org/search?query=embedded ). So, if you're interested in the software side of things, maintaining packages would perhaps be a good way to start?
