Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org. We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community shares tasks that need help.

These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:

Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills, anything you wish to say about yourself really).

Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it from a colleague, or social media, for example?

your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
- have you participated in FOSS before, or is this the first time?
- how do you imagine your place in a FOSS community?

- community development and outreach, campaigning, journalism
- Operating System (Do you use GNU/Linux as your main OS? Is Fedora Linux your main distribution?)
- non-software development: design (Inkscape/Gimp/?), music/video/podcasting, marketing, language proficiency
- software development related: command line, version control: git/hg/svn/?, rpm/packaging, programming languages/frameworks/utilities, testing, infrastructure/sysadmin
your experience in communication platforms:
- have you used mailing lists before?
- what is your preferred real time chat platform?
- have you helped with moderating/administering forums?
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?

Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be relevant for you.

Greetings Everyone,
I'm a mechatronics engineer from Egypt, passionate about computer science, philosophy, video games and music. I have worked in a robotics , embedded systems, industrial automation and currently in the field service engineering. My skills involve programming microcontrollers like stm and AVR in addition to PLCs, customizing marlin 3d printer firmware, video game making with unity and C# and so on.
This is my first time participating in open source but I have made some courses, code and writings under the CC license. I imagine that after some time I'd be contributing to the engineering and gaming parts of fedora whether its packages or spins like fedora robotics or games.
I currently use Fedora KDE as my main OS after distro hopping for a couple of years with dual booting windows, I like the project philosophy and am looking forward to contributing to it.
My free time is usually like one week per month or two weeks. That's when I could spend like 3 hours each day contributing to the project then I'll stop as my work usually makes me travel to remote areas for a couple of weeks. Then when I returned I could continue.

I've searched throgh the projects it seems fedora 3d printing or robotics are a sound fit but it seems a barren land there specially in robotics can you suggest how to start in any of them

Hi @shir-sama I think you are correct. Robotics and 3d printing dont have an engaged group at this time in Fedora.
You could however use that to your and our advantage, and quickly become a leader in that space.

Maybe you want to write a doc on how to install and use printers, or on what tech stack one needs for robotics? Maybe you have ideas about how you could bring people in to Fedora that currently use robotics etc? The slate is clean for you to try and test new things, and help us promote the things you like.

Nice to see you are into philosophy, I myself have a degree in the same!

You can also identify areas that Fedora lacks in, and help package software that would fill the gap. If you have a direction to go in, we can help support that.

I think I could see some way of making the base lines on things like how to get the basic tools one needs to use 3d printers, install drivers and troubleshoot the main issues and how to start modeling and simulating robots or even for some one new to learn how to build a robot or a 3d printer from scratch and so on but, I don't think I have enough familiarity with fedora as I said its the first time for me contributing to the FOSS community so I think it's better if I first familiarized myself with how thing go, what works and what doesn't, what methods lead the first leaders in other spaces that got them successfully spreading and promoting their ideas or software and what methods endded up as a dead projects and so on.

so, Im thinking of getting invovled in a project that would get me familiar with the community and how things go and after that I could start doing the same in 3d printing and robotics.
also it's been some time for me since I wrote my last codes so I need to practice for some time to "derust" my gears.

any suggestions or insights ?
