Welcome
Hello @zeffar ! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)
Get to know each other better
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
Hello!
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
It will depend on how enjoyable the projects are, so anywhere between 2 - 20 h/week
Hi @zeffar , how are you doing? Is there anything we can help with?
Hello!
I haven't had time to browse though most of the communities here due to my work but I'd love to dive in and help with whatever I can.
Knowing a bit about my background (to also be noted that I enjoy toying around with Reinforcement Learning and general AI), where do you think would be a good direction to head towards, @ankursinha ? I'm looking forward to any kind of technical contribution that I'm suited for.
Metadata Update from @theprogram:
Hi Zeffar,
Sorry we didn't get back to you sooner.
How have you found the Fedora ecosystem? Did you find a group to interest you?
There are some considerations regarding AI at Fedora, I can try and look them up for you if you can't find them.
Let us know if you need anything and we'll try more this time. Do put a 'tag' up with needs response will help us see you better.
Regards,
Mat
Hi!
Unfortunately I didn't make the time to get interested in the groups of the ecosystem, but I just finished my exams so I have some spare time.
On the flip side, I've been working on some wayland tools for multi-minitor set-ups, as already existing tools such as ydotool are severely lacking compared to their xorg counterparts.
My question about general guidance still stands, I'd appreciate a bit of directional input, as I'm still not a FOSS veteran.
All the best!
Hi Zeffar,
Multi-monitors for Wayland eh, yes that will be a great contribution.
There isa thread on ask Fedora https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/fedora-41-and-two-monitors/144045/5 which may be related ... Do you know what is going on with how the system 'chooses' which monitor to display on?
To me it sound like you have great ideas and projects - we need to help you get connected to people working on similar things. I'll look into that in the next few days.
Do you have your projects up on GitLab or packaged in the COPR? https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/
Are you on Matrix?
Best regards,
Mat
Hey,
I'm not particularly familiar with how KWin and Libdrm function under the hood yet but I'm looking into it. Thanks for the threads!
I don't have my projects up on any of the two, I'm currently working on a PR for ydotool on github instead.
If you'd be so kind, though, I'd love to get connected to the people working on PipeWire and contribute there :)
I've been struggling a lot with configuring multiple audio profiles on separate sinks and seamlessly transitioning between them so I want to learn how it functions on a lower level and help with making a more easy to use UI
I am on Matrix, yes: @zeffar:fedora.im
All the best!
Ok, Wow! PipeWire is not rumoured to be easy!
They do have a reputation of being collaborative and open to
contribution though.
PipeWire is upstream of Fedora, so Fedora will have a package maintainer
and people may contribute but it is essentially a separate project.
There will be a package maintainer who you may be interested in talking
with. You can find their details at
https://packages.fedoraproject.org/pkgs/pipewire/pipewire/
Become acquainted with the related packages and you could start to think
about how to improve the Fedora PipeWire experience.
PipeWire is developed at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/
I do not have any contacts there. I would recommend studying up and
getting well acquainted before introducing yourself. Once you feel
familiar with their development you could approach them and see what
they need from a new contributor.
I also found a PipeWire Guide, which could be a great way to contribute
while learning the ropes.
Within Fedora though we do have docs
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/docs/ for authoritative information
and a wiki for development purposes
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Project_Wiki
You could consider writing or adding to these documentation portals
while you learn more about PipeWire development.
You could also reach out on the discussion.fedoraproject.org it does not
look like much to do with audio or PipeWire is on Matrix.
Well that is a ton of work! So no need to rush, have a look around and
I'll check in with you in a couple of weeks.
EDIT: there is also the PipeWire docs at https://docs.pipewire.org/devel/page_tutorial1.html
Cheers,
Mat

Hi Zeffar,
Did you manage to get a hold of anyone in Pipewire?
I'm seeing a number of Pipewire and audio issues come up in discussion.fedoraproject.org have you thought about writing any docs on teh subject?
All the best, just let us know if we can do anything for you.
Mat.
Metadata Update from @theprogram:
Hi Mat! After diving deep into how pipewire works I ended up localizing the problem I had to be between Nvidia and Wayland. I have since then switched to an AMD GPU and the problems I wanted to solve are no longer existent haha.
I'll look around again for some other things to do (I take suggestions too) since pipewire seems to be working perfectly on my end.
Would you like to help out with some docs for gaming? We need someone on KDE to test a few commands and take some screenshots? We are talking on Matrix, chat.fedoraproject.org in the gaming channel #gaming:fedoraproject.org
Another new contributer Martin (Aiant) has done this so far https://gitlab.com/morenomartinesteban96/adoc-tutorials/-/blob/main/steam/01-install.adoc
Sounds good! My current config is Fedora KDE on my laptop and Bazzite KDE on my PC. I mainly game on my PC instead of my laptop but I'd be happy to help out! I've also found out there is little documentation on overclocking/undervolting GPUs for gaming so maybe I can poke around too. I'll join the Matrix channel when I get back into the country this week, thanks!
