Welcome
Hello @argodinho! Welcome to Fedora!
Before we begin, please subscribe to the Fedora join mailing list at
fedora-join@lists.fedoraproject.org.
We use this list for general discussion, and it is also where the community
shares tasks that need help.
These links are a good read to begin with. They tell you what the Free/Open
Source community is about, and then they'll introduce you to Fedora: what
Fedora is all about, and what we do, and of course, how we do it:
Next, when you're ready, could you please introduce yourself (preferably on
the list) so that the community can get to know you? (Interests, skills,
anything you wish to say about yourself really).
Finally, could you let us know how you learned about the Fedora project? Was it
from a colleague, or social media, for example?
If you have any questions at all, please ask! We'll use this ticket to keep in
touch! :)
Get to know each other better
In addition, could you provide some information to understand your requirements
better? (You can write them in the introduction, or answer here if you feel more
comfortable).
For example:
your experience with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities/ecosystems:
your background/skills, for example:
your experience in communication platforms:
how much time are you looking to/are you able to spend on volunteering (approximate hours per week)?
Remember that this is not a job interview at all. This is just an icebreaker to
help all your new friends get to know you quicker. The better we know you, the
better we can support you in identifying Fedora activities that promise to be
relevant for you.
Please write how much/whatever you wish. :).
My experience with Open Source Software
I got to know about Linux a year back, in the second year of college (through a book actually!), so i got to dual booting my laptop and chose Fedora after going through some YouTube videos (and also because i like the color blue). I have taken part in competitions in college similar to Hacktoberfest, but i would consider this my first time contributing to Open Source Software
I have been intrigued by Operating Systems in general, and although as a subject it was taught mostly theoretically, I would like to contribute in any practical way that i can.
i attended a DevOps event recently in which i was introduced to Jenkins and CI, and that is a field i find interesting and would like to know more about/could contribute to, in the future.
My Background
I have worked with in-campus groups, mostly helping the content writing teams in coming up with slogans or for content to be presented to other students.
I currently use both windows and linux, Fedora being the main distribution.
In-terms of non-software development, i consider myself to be fairly proficient in English and Hindi. I also have a knack for public speaking/writing
I am comfortable with the command line and also with git. I have subjects related to AI and ML in college so i am familiar with Python and its libraries. Also familiar with Docker and containerisation.
My experience in Communication Platforms
My only experience with Mailing Lists has been subscribing to Newsletters, none apart from that.
I am fine with Telegram/Whatsapp/Discord as a real-time chat platform.
I have helped moderate a Discord Channel of about 50 users
Weekly Volunteering
I am very eager to learn and volunteer to the Fedora Community and considering that i am currently in uni, i'd be comfortable with 7-8 hours of contribution per week, but i say this while keeping in mind the "underestimate your free time and overestimate the task at hand" thumb rule although i do not need help with the latter xD.
I have been going through and reading up on different groups/fields in Fedora. Whatever activity gets assigned to me, i will be eager to learn and help in any way that i can!
Hi @argodinho how are you doing? Is there anything we can help with?
Hey @ankursinha! I'm doing just fine, I was looking around for projects on Pagure and found 389-ds-base to be interesting and was going through their documentation. Also where can one find/contribute/learn more about the Fedora Media Writer application? Thanks !
Sorry, I missed the notification. The media writer is developed here:
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter
I don't know much about 389-ds myself. Note that Fedora is "downstream" for most of the software that is included in the OS---we don't develop it, we package it but it's developed by others "upstream".
Metadata Update from @theprogram:
Hi @argodinho
How have you found exploring Fedora?
If you need anything else we are here to guide you.
Did you get in contact with the Media Writer group on github?
If you have got involved do let us know :)
Cheers,
Mat
