here is my proposal for an article on fedora blogs related to what we did https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/MATE_Desktop

Do you see important issues to solve? Do you see some missing information you would like to see added?
Please share your feedback <3

The Fedora Community, with help of the Languages-in-floss members, migrated the MATE Desktop project on the Fedora Weblate instance. TL;DR; You can contribute here: https://translate.fedoraproject.org/projects/mate-desktop/

This work allows a better user-experience for both developers and translators, by replacing the non-free and feature limited Transifex by a state of the art open-source translation platform: Weblate.

Why migrate? A lot of translations were not included upstream due to several issues. These ranged from a lack of integration with git workflows to technical errors in translations (like missing variables in plural strings from example). These issues wasted too much maintainer time, hence the need for a change embodied by Weblate.

Why the Fedora community? Because we should support allies whenever possible. Because the MATE community considered the migration to suit their needs. Because we have three active contributors with admin knowledge in our community.

This work included the synchronization of all translations from Transifex in the git repositories, dealing with inconsistencies to have a new clean baseline, and then the configuration of Weblate to include each translation file.

The MATE Desktop project is about 200k words to translate on more than 40 git repositories, it is a lot for one single translator to keep track of. Having a collaboration tool to see change history and notify on changes is an important asset.

Since the migration, the MATE Desktop received translation on 32 languages done by 36 contributors.
The 6 Languages with the most changes on Weblate: Chinese, Georgian, Kazakh, Kabyle, Lao and Serbian, please take this as an opportunity to reach contributors, peer review translations and work as a team!

We hope existing translators will enjoy the improvement and that newcomers will find it easy to translate MATE Desktop.
