Simplify type hints

Assuming this will be run on Fedora, all available Python versions
support using the normal container names as types, instead of the ones
from `typing`.
Also, add missing type hints on a couple functions.

The exception `e` is printed on error, except the exception was never
captured into the `e` variable in the first place.

For instance, this allows the user to create an alias or wrapper script
