Proposal

Goals

A home server with all the professional features and benefits of the Server Edition, but tailored to home server use cases and resources. Intended as replacement for / improvement to commercial NAS and fully curated solutions. Challenge: Fedora tools (i.e., especially Cockpit and Ansible) offer a similarly easy-to-use administration, but they are lightweight, perform better and can be perfectly customized.

  • Environment friendliness by low power consumption and sustainability.
  • Affordability
  • Highly customizable and configurable
  • Open system, enabling people to get started with minimal barriers and enabling people to expand their knowledge and achieve digital sovereignty (Empowerment)
  • Provide a ready to use installation with a typical and common set of applications already installed
  • Reducing / streamlining administration by pre-configuration
  • High quality: software included based on Fedora maintained packages, built as reproducible as possible and undergoing the Fedora QA process and security requirements.

Artifact properties

These objectives set out some basic requirements for the deliverable.

  • Appliance with a typical set of preinstalled and preconfigured (dormant) applications
  • A dedicated, ready to use bootable system image to be just copied onto the device
  • Upon first boot guided activation and customization of services, using Ansible and Cockpit
  • Target devices: ARM SBC and older low power x86 devices, in future RISC-V
  • Providing dedicated support for a set of reference models ('recommended by Fedora Server Edition Working Group')
